We spent two mornings in small boats out on the lagoon. It is difficult to photograph whales because as you would expect, they move rapidly. These photos and some of the others in this section represent the combined efforts of all of us especially Bill Maginnis and John Marshall. For whatever reason the first day produced more pictures and certainly was more exciting.

We observed Gray Whales which belong to the Suborder, Mysticeti, i.e. baleen whales. Gray whales travel for 2-3 months from the Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea to the lagoons on the West Coast of Baja California and even may go around the tip of the peninsula (as shown on the map on this page). They stay in the lagoons for 2-3 months. They mate along the way or may mate, give birth to and feed the calves in the lagoons. Adult males measure about 45-46 feet and adult females measure slightly more. Both sexes weigh 30-40 tons. The calves weigh one ton at birth and are about 15 feet in length. The skin is colored with white barnacles and orange whale lice.
